Owning What You Build


An archive you can't export is a hostage. Make sure your content can leave with you.

Platforms change terms, prices and priorities. The projects that survive are the ones whose owners can take the content elsewhere.

Before you fill an archive with irreplaceable material, check that you can get it back out: photographs, text, dates, the lot.

Keep a copy off the platform

Once a year, export and store a copy somewhere ordinary—a hard drive, a cloud folder. It takes twenty minutes and removes an entire category of regret.
